    Circuito 2 clásico Machu Picchu

Since the recent changes to the visitation regulations, buying an entry ticket to Machu Picchu is no longer a single decision. The current system divides the citadel into specific sectors that do not always connect with one another. If you choose a circuit thinking you can move freely throughout the entire llaqta, you might face an unpleasant surprise at the checkpoint.

In this article, we explain the real differences between the most requested circuits so you can select the one that truly fits what you want to see.

    1. Circuit 1B: Upper Terrace (The Panoramic View)

This circuit is designed exclusively for those who prioritize a perspective from the highest point. It is a short tour, lasting approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    • The Route: Direct access to the Guardian’s House and the upper terraces. Here you will get a panoramic photo where all of Machu Picchu is visible, but naturally from a greater distance. This is the highest point allowed without climbing a mountain.
    • The Real Limitation: This ticket does not allow access to the urban sector. You will not see the temples, the Sacred Rock, or the water fountains up close. Once the photo is taken, the circuit guides you toward the exit.
    • Profile: Ideal for people with reduced mobility or travelers with very limited time who are only looking for a general overview of the surroundings.

    2. Circuit 2: The Classic Experience (Routes 2A and 2B)

This is the most complete circuit and, therefore, the first to sell out (booking at least 3 months in advance is recommended). It combines a tour of the religious and urban sectors with the most sought-after camera angle.

    • The Route: Both routes include visits to key landmarks: the Temple of the Sun, the Main Square, the Intihuatana (according to schedule), the Sacred Rock, and the Temple of the Condor. It is on this circuit where you will get the classic photo with Machu Picchu in the background, which is the image always seen on the internet.
    • Operational Fact: Route 2A is the standard path, while 2B uses a slightly lower platform, but operationally both offer the experience that 90% of tourists are looking for.
    • Duration: Between 2.5 to 3 hours.

    3. Circuit 3B: Royalty Route (Lower Sector)

This circuit is preferred by those with physical difficulties or travelers who have visited Machu Picchu before and want to see specific architectural details of the lower zone.

    • The Route: You enter through the agricultural sector and visit the House of the Inca, the Water Fountains, and the Temple of the Sun (from its base). It is the circuit with the fewest stairs and inclines. Regarding photography, here the photo is from the side; meaning, you also have Machu Picchu in the background but from a side view of the citadel.
    • What You Should Know: You do not have access to the Guardian’s House platform. You will see Machu Picchu “from the bottom up” and in profile.
    • Technical Advantage: This ticket has higher availability and is usually the “Plan B” when classic circuits are sold out.

    Recommendation

If it is your first time, your priority should be Circuit 2 (A or B) as it is the most balanced regarding history and photography. If you are looking for a relaxed visit without climbing too many steps, 3B is the most sensible technical choice.

Remember that tickets have a designated entry tolerance. In low season it is 30 minutes, and in high season (June to November) it extends to 45 minutes. Outside of this timeframe, the staff is strict and you could lose your entry.
