Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, is a fascinating destination year-round. However, the timing of your visit can significantly affect your experience. The climate in Cusco is mainly divided into two seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Both have their advantages, and depending on what you’re looking for in your trip, you may choose the one that best suits your preferences.
The dry season is the most popular time to visit Cusco and runs from April to October. During these months, rainfall is scarce, and the weather is cooler, especially at night, but daytime temperatures are pleasant and sunny. This is the ideal time to explore outdoor wonders such as Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the various archaeological sites surrounding the city.
In particular, from June to August, the region sees the most visitors due to school holidays in many countries, and it is also when major festivals like Inti Raymi (the Festival of the Sun, held on June 24) are celebrated, a vibrant and colorful cultural event.
During the dry season, trekking routes like the Inca Trail are open and much more accessible. Hiking, bike tours, and visits to nearby ruins are perfect activities during these months.

The rainy season in Cusco spans from November to March, with the heaviest rainfall typically occurring between January and February. While it’s less popular due to the wet weather, the low season has its own advantages: lower prices, fewer tourists, and a much greener, more lush landscape. If you’re a nature lover, this is the perfect time to enjoy the flora and fauna of the Andes at its peak.
Despite the rain, showers are usually short, and mornings can be quite pleasant, though afternoons tend to be wetter. While the Inca Trail and other trekking routes may close during this season, there are alternative paths available, perfect for travelers eager to embrace nature under more challenging conditions.

No matter which season you choose, it’s always important to be prepared for the local conditions:
The best time to visit Cusco depends on what you’re looking for in your travel experience. If you prefer more predictable weather and don’t mind the crowds, the dry season (April to October) is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and fewer tourists, the rainy season (November to March) can offer a more introspective experience and the chance to see Cusco in its lush, vibrant form.
No matter when you choose to travel, Cusco always has something magical to offer!
