      Description

Venture into the heart of the Amazon, where nature unfolds in all its splendor. You will enjoy breathtaking sightings at the Macaw Clay Lick, learn about wildlife through innovative research activities, and explore the rich biodiversity at an ecolodge immersed in the jungle. With each step, you will discover the deep connection between the local community and its environment.

      Itinerary

      Day 1

      Day 1: Welcome to Tambopata!

      • We arrive in Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, and start our adventure with a one-hour bus ride, followed by a one-hour boat trip to the lodge. During the boat ride, we catch a glimpse of Amazonian cuisine as we leave the city behind and admire the stunning landscapes of the rainforest.
      • Upon arrival at Refugio Amazonas, a charming ecolodge in the heart of a chestnut forest, we settle into our rooms. The lodge features a bar, massage room, and dining services, and serves as the base for the Wired Amazon program, where we can participate in research activities like Aerobotany and AmazonCam.
      • In the afternoon, we take a short hike to the 35-meter high Canopy Tower. We climb the secure stairs to the top, where we enjoy panoramic views of the Tambopata National Reserve forest and observe toucans, macaws, and raptors soaring above the canopy.
      • Before dinner, we attend a night lecture by Wired Amazon researchers, who share insights about ongoing projects and the importance of citizen science in rainforest conservation.
      • After dinner, we participate in the “Discovering New Species” We join the researchers to explore the forest and potentially discover new species, contributing valuable data about the area’s biodiversity.

      Day 2

Day 2: Macaws, AmazonCam, and Local Farm Visit

      • We start the day early with a visit to the Macaw Clay Lick, one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in the Amazon. On clear mornings, we watch as dozens of macaws and hundreds of parrots gather on the riverbank, creating a vibrant display of color and sound. Discreetly, we admire green-winged, scarlet, and blue-and-yellow macaws, as well as smaller parrots, as they descend to ingest clay, being most active at dawn.
      • In the afternoon, we participate in the AmazonCam activity, where we set up camera traps along the trail to the Amazon farm, capturing images of elusive wildlife and contributing to research on animal populations and behaviors.
      • We visit a local farm in the Amazon, where we explore a variety of crops cultivated by the community. We learn about sustainable agriculture in the region and discover how nearly every plant and tree has a purpose, reflecting the deep connection between the local people and their environment.

      Day 3

Day 3: The Chestnut Forest and Citizen Science

      • We explore the chestnut forest located near the lodge and learn about the origins of this key Amazonian product. We visit a chestnut camp to observe the towering chestnut trees and understand how local communities harvest the nuts once a year during the rainy season.
      • In the afternoon, we choose from several options to enrich our experience:
      • Aerobotany + Lake: We fly a drone to capture stunning aerial photographs of the treetops on our way to Lago Condenado, enjoying a unique view of the Amazon and its complex ecosystem.
      • AmazonCam + Medicinal Plants Trail: We set camera traps along the trail to capture wildlife and then explore the Medicinal Plants Trail, learning about traditional healing practices of various plants such as Sacha-Ajos, Uña de Gato and Ayahuasca.

      Day 4

Day 4: End of the adventure

      • Enjoy an early breakfast before departing Refugio Amazonas. We return to Puerto Maldonado for your flight, taking with you unforgettable memories of your Amazon adventure and the satisfaction of having contributed to the conservation efforts of the Wired Amazon program in the Tambopata National Reserve.
